Renting a car to reach a ski resort
When a hire car is worth it at the start of the season, what to check beyond the daily rate, and how to compare cars with DiscoverCars.
The train drops a lot of people in the valley. The shift, the staff house and the supermarket are often higher up, and the first Sunday of the season the resort bus is full. A hire car is not mandatory, but at the start of many seasons it is what gets you there with your bag, on time.
When renting is worth it
- You arrive at night or on a Sunday, when the resort bus does not match check-in.
- Staff housing is not in the town the train stops at.
- You share the car with someone on the team and split the cost.
- You move between the slopes, a rental shop or several hotels in the same valley.
If the contract includes a transfer from the airport, or the staff house is next to the train station, do not book out of habit. Ask in the offer chat before you pay.
What to check beyond the daily rate
- The total, including airport fees, young-driver charges and a one-way drop-off.
- The insurance excess and whether the deposit fits on your card.
- Snow chains or winter tyres: mountain roads in season often need them. Confirm it on the car listing.
- Fuel policy and mileage.
- Minimum age and years on your licence. Many companies charge extra under 25.
- The real pickup: a desk in the airport, or a shuttle to an off-site office.
Airports people actually use for the Alps and Pyrenees
French Alps: Geneva, Lyon, Chambéry or Grenoble. Swiss Alps: Geneva or Zurich. Italian Alps: Turin or Milan. Pyrenees and Andorra: Toulouse, Barcelona or Tarbes-Lourdes. Pick the airport that leaves fewer hours on a snowy road, not only the cheapest flight if you land before dawn with no buffer.
Compare cars with DiscoverCars
DiscoverCars gathers offers from several companies so you can see price and availability in one place. Nevajobs does not add its own discount: the amount is the one shown by the comparison site.
Affiliate link. Nevajobs may earn a commission if you book through it.
The job first, the car second
Book the car once you have dates and a housing address. Until then, finish your profile and look at offers on /jobs. Arriving with a contract and a confirmed car avoids paying for extra rental days.
